Squirrels are where the adventure begins!
For 4 - 6 year olds, being a Squirrels means trying new things, making new firends, and having loads of fun along the way. It's all about learning through play - building confidence, curiosity, and kindness from the very start.
Squirrels take their first steps into the Scouts family, starting their journey with teamwork, creativity, and those all important Skills For Life.
Squirrels are the youngest members of the Scouts, aged 4 - 6.
They are full of energy, curiosity, and BIG ideas. Being a Squirrels is all about exploring those ideas in a safe, supportive space.
Squirrels:
Try new things and learn through play
Make friends and feel part of a team
Get active and explore the world around them
Build confidence and resilience
Discover how to be kind and help others
Each week, they gather in groups called Squirrel Dreys, where they laugh, play and learn together.
Being a Squirrel means having fun while learning the Skills for Life that help you grow up happy, brave and curious. Here's just a glimpse of what your Squirrel could be getting up to:
From bug hunts in our local area to nature trails in the park, Squirrels love to get outdoors. They splash in puddles, collect leaves, build dens and look up at the stars. They are learning to appreciate the world around them and how to care for it too!
Squirrels learn best when they are doing especially when they are doing things together. That could mean crafting something brilliant, building with natural materials, listening to the wonders of a story or sining songs around a camp fire. It's all abouot developing confidence, creativity and independence.
Squirrels learn that they have the power to make a difference. That could be tidying up, helping a friend or saying something kind. They are learning to be thoughtful, caring and community-minded. Its one small step at a time.
Our Drey is led by an adult volunteer who is supported by a team of other volunteers who plan activities, share skills and keep everyone safe and supported. It's usually difficult to tell who is having more fun the adults or our young people.
Some volunteers go by fun nicknames while others use their real names. But most importantly every volunteer helps to create a warm, welcoming place where our young people can thrive.
You don't need to know how to pitch a tent or tie a knot - just bring buckets of enthusiasm , a sense of fun and a willingness to help. Whether it's story telling, organising snacks, or lending a hand behind the scenes, there is absolutely a place for you on the team!
